Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Perjamuan Kudus, dan Neuroteologi

Debbie Tohatta

Abstract

Abstract. This article criticizes the liturgical trend that is still built on neurotypical standards, which assess congregational participation based on the ability to follow the rhythm of worship, verbal communication, and abstract symbolic responses. This unwittingly makes people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) theological objects, rather than theological subjects. Therefore, this article aims to emphasize that the Holy Communion should be a space for recognizing the theological subjectivity of people with ASD, while simultaneously criticizing the normalization of neurotypicality in the liturgy. This study uses a neurotheological approach to understand the neurological aspects of people with ASD. The results show that Holy Communion is a space for the experience of faith that is embodied, understood not only as a symbolic practice that is cognitive and verbal, but as a faith event that involves the body, nervous system, sensory, affective, and repetitive ritual rhythms.
