Memori Penderitaan dan Iman yang Bertanggung Jawab: Pembacaan Novel “Laut Bercerita” dalam Perspektif Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Abstract. In societies that have experienced violence, memories of suffering are often caught between the demand to forget for the sake of social stability and the victims’ need for truth and justice. This study aims to read the memory of suffering in Leila S. Chudori’s novel “Laut Bercerita” as a risky ethical step and to reflect on it theologically in dialogue with the thoughts of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This study uses a qualitative approach with an inductive method, in which the novel “Laut Bercerita” serves as a text of the suffering experienced by victims of forced disappearance and the families left behind. The analysis is conducted through a thematic reading of the narratives of trauma, the body, waiting, and testimony, which are then reflected in the light of the concepts of responsible action, costly grace, and suffering with God in Bonhoeffer’s thinking. The result shows that the practice of remembering can be understood as a form of responsible action of faith, that rejects the normalization of violence and the erasure of history.

Dalam masyarakat yang mengalami kekerasan, ingatan atas penderitaan sering berada dalam ketegangan antara tuntutan untuk melupakan demi stabilitas sosial dan kebutuhan korban akan kebenaran serta keadilan. Penelitian ini bertujuan membaca memori penderitaan dalam novel “Laut Bercerita” karya Leila S. Chudori sebagai langkah etis yang berisiko, serta merefleksikannya secara teologis dalam dialog dengan pemikiran Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode induktif, di mana novel “Laut Bercerita” berfungsi sebagai teks pengalaman penderitaan korban penghilangan paksa dan keluarga yang ditinggalkan. Analisis dilakukan melalui pembacaan tematik atas narasi trauma, tubuh, penantian, dan kesaksian yang kemudian direfleksikan dalam terang konsep responsible action, costly grace, dan suffering with God dalam pemikiran Bonhoeffer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa praktik mengingat dapat dipahami sebagai bentuk tindakan iman yang bertanggung jawab, yang menolak normalisasi kekerasan dan penghapusan sejarah.
