Abstract

Abstract. Matthew 18:15-17 is generally used as a basis for establishing church discipline, which aims to maintain the holiness of teachings and community. There are two tensions related to this discipline, namely church discipline can lead to a reduction in congregation, and Matthew 18:15-17 has a gap in theme with the main theme in chapter 18. This study conducted by a sociological interpretation approach. The sociological interpretation of Matthew 18:1-17 successfully presents a very complex social context, where the Jewish community has been divided into several groups, and is influenced by the motivation of false values of purity and honor. This gap affects the way of looking at and behaving towards others and sinners. The exclusion of sinners is based on the construction of purity, honor and a false social structure, so Jesus offers a different perspective, where sinners are not destroyers of purity, but people who must be embraced.

Abstrak. Matius 18:15-17 pada umumnya dipakai sebagai dasar untuk menyusun disiplin gereja, yang bertujuan menjaga kekudusan ajaran dan komunitas. Terdapat dua ketegangan terkait pendisiplinan tersebut, yaitu disiplin gereja dapat menyebabkan pengurangan jemaat, dan Matius 18:15-17 memiliki kesenjangan tema dengan tema utama dalam pasal 18. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan tafsir sosiologis. Penafsiran sosiologis terhadap Matius 18:1-17 berhasil menghadirkan konteks sosial yang sangat kompleks, di mana komunitas Yahudi telah terbagi menjadi beberapa kelompok, dan dipengaruhi oleh motivasi nilai kemurnian dan kehormatan yang salah. Kesenjangan tersebut memengaruhi cara pandang dan sikap terhadap orang lain dan orang berdosa. Pengucilan terhadap orang berdosa didasarkan pada konstruksi kemurnian, kehormatan dan struktur sosial yang salah, sehingga Yesus menawarkan cara pandang yang berbeda, di mana orang berdosa bukanlah perusak kemurnian, melainkan orang yang harus dirangkul.
