ALLAH MENJAGA KEUTUHAN UMAT-NYA (Matius 18:12-14)
Abstract
The parable of lost sheep is one of the two parables which is written by the Apostle Matthew in Matthew chapter 18. Another parable is the parable of the unforgiving servant (23-35). Most scholars interpret this parable teaching about the persistence of searching. Armand Barus emphasizes the persistence of the shepherd in searching the lost sheep because of his deep sadness motivation. Therefore, when he finds the lost sheep, he has a great joy. The focus of his reading is put on the character of the shepherd. This writing will try to give a refresh or new interpretation by responding to Barus’ interpretation. The interpretation will be focused on the character of the shepherd and the events of the story from the beginning until the end of the story. The theme of the parable is not the persistence of the shepherd in searching the lost sheep but God’s successful action in maintaining the wholeness of his congregation. The action is made by two important ways – leaving and searching. Leaving means to choice the right priority. Searching means to find back in love motivation what his belongings. Leaving and searching give the result. It is finding. Finding means the successful efforts in maintaining the wholeness of congregation with joy included.
